Every parent knows how tough it can be to leave their kids behind for the first time, and Kelly Clarkson is no exception. Recently, Kelly and her husband Brandon Blackstock made the big decision to leave their children at home while heading to Minneapolis, MN for the NFL Tailgate Party ahead of Super Bowl LII — an event where Kelly was set to perform. While Brandon seemed cool and collected about the whole thing, Kelly admitted she was a little more on edge.
“This is seriously the first time they’re not with me,” Kelly confessed to E! News during the event-packed sports weekend. “The reason is simple: they’re not allowed in any of the shows because you have to be 21 and over. I didn’t want them just sitting in a hotel room all day. Brandon was all about it, saying, ‘Yeah, we should probably just leave them back home!’ He’s the type of guy who’s all for date nights and having some alone time. Clearly, he’s handling this whole parenting situation a lot better than I am,” Kelly laughed.

“We actually did get some really good sleep last night,” Kelly admitted, surprising herself. But while the idea of leaving her kids behind weighed heavily on her mind, her daughter River Rose, three years old, didn’t seem to notice a thing. “She didn’t even care!” Kelly joked, shaking her head in disbelief. “She’s such a trooper.”
“I’m freaking out,” Kelly continued, her voice tinged with a mix of humor and worry. “It’s kind of morbid, but before I left, I sat down at my house and wrote on a notepad, ‘If something happens, my children go to…’ I’m just so worried when we’re not together! I’m not being paranoid, I’m just a planner!” Kelly’s candid admission reflects the common fears and concerns many parents face when leaving their kids for the first time. It’s a tough call, and no matter how prepared you think you are, it’s never easy.
Reflections on Parenthood and Life Lessons
Back in January, Kelly shared that she and Brandon had decided they were done expanding their family. “They’re challenging, but they’re absolutely worth it,” she said with a laugh, adding, “Wine is definitely necessary!” Despite the challenges, Kelly couldn’t help but gush about the joy her kids bring into her life. “They’re incredible. They say the most random, insightful things that make you stop and think. They call you out and teach you so much,” the 35-year-old revealed.

Kelly expressed her hopes for her children's future. “I hope that with our two boys and two girls, they see their parents as successful, loving, and respectful people because that’s what we want for them. “When you’re younger and in this kind of industry, where people are always talking about you—whether it’s good or bad—it’s hard not to get caught up in it. But I want my kids to know that they should do what they love, regardless of how famous they might be. Love what you do, love who you work with, and don’t work with people you don’t like or do things you don’t enjoy,” Kelly concluded. Her heartfelt words are a testament to the wisdom she’s gained as a parent and a performer.
