There’s not much that Ree Drummond doesn’t do with her best friend, Hyacinth Kane. She credits Hyacinth for much of her success, including her latest book. These two women have been inseparable for years, attending each other’s children’s births—they both have four kids each—and traveling together. Their bond is one of those rare friendships that truly withstand the test of time and life’s many challenges.
So it’s only fitting that Ree, the queen of the lifestyle empire known as “The Pioneer Woman,” would dedicate her latest project to her BFF. “I wanted to introduce Little Ree’s best friend, Hyacinth,” Ree said during a signing event for her latest kids’ book, Little Ree: Best Friends Forever. “Hyacinth and I became best friends when we were adults. Just like in real life, [in the book], Hyacinth rescues me a few times and even pulls me out of the mud. It’s a true reflection of our friendship.”

From City Life to Country Roots: How It All Began
Ree Drummond, now 49, didn’t always live the country life. In fact, her journey to becoming the Pioneer Woman started in the mid-'90s when she was on her way to Chicago. She made a brief stop back home in Oklahoma, where she met her future husband, Ladd, and through him, Hyacinth. “When I moved to the country as an adult, I sure felt like a fish out of water,” Ree admits with a laugh. But Hyacinth was there every step of the way, helping her adjust to her new life on the ranch. This transition became the foundation for many of her stories, including her first Little Ree book, which focused on her adaptation to rural living.
Building an Empire Together
Hyacinth hasn’t just been a friend; she’s been a partner in crime as Ree’s business has grown from a humble blog to a massive lifestyle empire. Today, that includes a hit Food Network show, a restaurant, a store, and even a guest lodge in Pawhuska, OK. “We’re getting thousands of visitors in our little town with a population of just 3,800,” Hyacinth says, marveling at the impact Ree has had on their community. Despite the success, Ree says her greatest joy comes from spending time with her best friend. “Cooking with Hyacinth is impossible not to enjoy,” she says. “She’s got a great sense of humor, she stirs, chops, and most importantly, she does the dishes. What more could you ask for in a friend?”
Best friends have fun together, go on adventures together, help each other up when one falls… and bake pies together. 😊 My new Little Ree book celebrates friendship (Hi, Hyacinth!) and pie baking contests, and I hope you love it!
