Let's take a trip down memory lane, folks. Remember the Conner family’s living room from the '90s? That place was practically a second home for many of us. The heart of that room was, without a doubt, the infamous brown couch with the rainbow afghan. It wasn’t just any couch—it was the setting for countless heartfelt and hilarious moments. Fans couldn’t wait to see that iconic piece of furniture make a comeback in the reboot. But guess what? It’s not the same couch, and that might come as a bit of a shock.
The Big Reveal: Not the Same Couch
Roseanne Barr and John Goodman spilled the beans on the couch situation during their appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on March 22. The couch we've grown to love? Turns out, it's a replica. "This is a replica, this ain’t the real one," Roseanne revealed with a laugh. John chimed in, explaining that the Smithsonian Institute now has the original couch, and they weren’t about to part with it for a reasonable price. "They wanted too much scratch for it," he joked. Apparently, ABC’s reboot budget couldn’t stretch that far. But Roseanne wasn’t too heartbroken about it. "It smells just like butt," she quipped, adding a touch of humor to the situation.
A Replica That Still Packs a Nostalgic Punch
While the original couch may have been whisked away to a museum, the replica is crafted to perfection, capturing the essence of the original. It's not just about the furniture; it's about the memories attached to it. The new couch will still evoke the same feelings of nostalgia and connection that made the original so special. Fans can rest assured that the spirit of the Conner family’s living room remains intact, even if the physical piece isn’t exactly the same.

It’s not uncommon for iconic TV sets to find new homes after their time on screen. For instance, the original Will & Grace set was donated to Emerson College, alma mater of co-creator Max Mutchnick. The set sat there for eight years, from 2008 until 2016, until Max decided to bring it back for the reboot. "That’s how the whole thing got rolling in the first place," Max shared with Playbill. "I was in the back of a taxi talking to my husband about a joke I would have written for Will & Grace had the show still been on the air, and my husband kind of said in a cheeky way, ‘Well, we do have the set.’ And it was from there that I called [co-creator/executive producer] David Kohan, and said, ‘Let’s do this.’ And we did."
Returning to the Roseanne Set: Same Vibe, New Energy
Unfortunately, the Roseanne team had to make do without the original couch’s magic, but they've assured fans that the nostalgic vibe will still be there. The full original cast is set to return, including John, who, let’s not forget, met an untimely demise at the end of the original series. So, even though the couch might be different, the essence of the Conner family's living room is alive and well. We can’t wait to see what they’ve done with the set and how this reboot will resonate with viewers.
