Drew Barrymore Opens Up About Life After Divorce And How Her Show Helped Her Through

Drew Barrymore Was in a ‘Very Dark and Fearful Place’ After Divorce

Let's talk about Drew Barrymore. You know her, right? The talented actress who’s been in the spotlight since she was a kid? Well, life hasn’t always been a bed of roses for her, especially after her third marriage came to an end. At 43, Drew has been candid about how her new TV show, Santa Clarita Diet, became a lifeline for her during a tough time after her divorce from Will Kopelman.

Now, Drew wasn’t exactly looking to jump back into acting when this opportunity came her way. In fact, she’d taken a break from the industry for several years to focus on raising her daughters, Olive and Frankie. But life had other plans. “I was not looking for a job. I had actually stopped acting for several years because I wanted to raise my girls,” she shared with NBC’s Willie Geist on Sunday Today. “But then things shifted. My marriage was ending, and it was a really tough time for me,” Drew admitted.

“I was definitely in a very dark and fearful place at the time. I thought to myself, ‘Is this really a good time to take on a new project?’” Drew recalled. “But ironically, it ended up teaching me a valuable lesson. Sometimes, what seems like the worst timing or the worst idea can actually be the thing that saves you. It can pull you out of that funk, give you a new focus, and empower you in ways you never imagined. It’s like switching your mindset from being stuck to moving forward toward something healthier and more positive,” she explained.

    Co-Parenting with Grace

Despite the split, Drew and Will have managed to keep things civil for the sake of their daughters. They’ve maintained a close relationship and continue to co-parent amicably. Still, Drew has admitted that ending her marriage was one of the hardest things she’s ever gone through. “Getting divorced was my worst nightmare. I always dreamed of raising my kids in this ultra-traditional way, you know, like the perfect little family,” she once said. “But life doesn’t always go as planned, and sometimes you have to adapt.”

    Focusing on the Modern Family

Nowadays, Drew’s focus is on raising her kids in a way that works for them, even if it’s not the traditional route she once envisioned. “My kids know they’ve got me, they’ve got their dad, their grandparents, their cousins, and even Will’s sister, Jill Kargman,” she explained. “We’re all in this together, figuring things out as we go. It’s not always the path you expect, but we’re doing it with grace and love. And honestly, I think a lot of families are doing the same thing these days,” she added.
